Frequently Asked Questions

Low carbon steel (ASTM 1006) is softer and more ductile than common mild steels like 1018 and A36 and has approximately 1/3 of the carbon content. It is a superior material for ornamental and sculptural forgework.
We answer this question in detail great over on our about page.

Heritage Iron Company offers Low Carbon Steel that meets the ASTM 1006 standard. Where possible we purchase mill runs of 1006 bars with even more desirable material attributes. Our steel is ideal for ornamental, decorative, and sculptural forge work. Currently we offer round bars up to 2” in diameter.
Heritage also offers commercially pure iron ingots. These ingots are incredibly soft and are 99.64% pure iron. This material has a variety of desirable uses including in chasing and repoussé, sculptural forging, and certain blade making applications.

Heritage offers two ways for you to receive your material.
Customer booked Less than Truck Load (LTL) Freight
We cut your material to 4 ft lengths, band them together, palletize them, plastic wrap the pallet and prepare them for freight shipping. Processing and Palletizing fees apply.
The customer books their own freight shipping, providing us with a pallet label and Bill of Lading (BOL). Heritage recommends freightquote.com as a logistics provider because they offer multiple quotes you can review before booking.
When your freight carrier arrives, Heritage will load your order onto the truck of your carrier, this is known as Freight on Board (FOB).
Pick up at our facility
We process the material to your specified length, and band, bundle, or palletize as directed. Processing and palletizing fees apply.

LTL means less than truck load. This is a type of shipping that is ideal for things too large or heavy to send by UPS, Fedex, etc., but too small to justify the cost of a full semi-truck load. LTL shipments are typically palletized for ease of moving with a fork lift and pallet jack in transit. A standard pallet is 40 × 48 inches and therefore the most cost effective shipping requires the bars be cut to 48” (4 feet).

YES!
The most inexpensive way to receive your material is to pick it up in person at our Detroit Facility. We will load it into your vehicle or onto your trailer for free.
If you must freight ship your order we’ve found that shipping to a terminal facility near your final destination can save up to 35% on the total cost of freight. This is especially advantageous if you do not have a loading dock or fork lift, or if you have a residential address.
Many of our customers bundle their shipping with others in their region in order to share the cost of LTL freight. We can help you connect with other customers to bundle and save. Just let us know.

Heritage Iron Company works with US based steel mills to produce 1006 low carbon steel. Often times this material is not readily available for us to buy, and the minimum purchase quantity is very large. Relatively speaking blacksmiths and artisanal forgework represents just a sliver of North American Steel consumption. Heritage Iron Company solicits pre-orders to ensure we meet our customers needs in terms of material size and quantity. We make large steel purchases 1-2 times per calendar year. While we purchase in excess of our pre-orders, we typically sell out of popular sizes quickly thereafter. The pre-order option allows us to limit our carrying costs while also ensuring material availability.
If you need hundreds of pounds of material in multiple sizes, we strongly recommend participating in the current pre-order by filling our our form here.

While placing a pre-order is making a commitment to purchase material, Heritage does not require any money until we order our production run from the mill. At that time, Heritage will contact you to confirm your order then issue an invoice which is due within 10 business days. Orders not paid promptly are subject to cancellation.
Mill lead times can vary, but generally from the time we place our order with the mill we hope to have the material in our customers hands 120-150 days later.
